Sorry Madam, We’ve Sold Out!

Çaliş Christmas Fair is a hoot! It is, after all, one of the few places in Turkey where one can squat in the loo and be serenaded by Bing Crosby singing ‘Sleigh Ride’ –

‘Just hear those sleigh bells jingling
Ring ting tingling too.
Come on, it’s lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you.’ Tra-la-la!

Lawdy, Lawdy! It’s enough to make us nostalgic for the smell of pipe tobacco, hot mince pies and Morecambe and Wise! Mind you, the weather was a bit unkind to everyone with rain forecast and duly delivered! That meant reduced visitors, damp displays and dampened spirits for some. Not our delightful Gülay from Okçular though – she was as bright and sunny as ever and this year, considering the weather, she’s had another bumper  day at the fair.

Father Gourdmas

Along with her more usual range of bits and bobs, she had painted up some brilliant ‘Father Gourdmas’ festive season decorations. Now, I do remember dropping a very large hint a couple of posts ago that if people wanted one then they needed to arrive and shop early because these particular items were so novel and attractive that they were bound to sell out quickly. And so it proved because within an hour or so we were having to say ‘Sorry madam, we’ve sold out!’

ps No sooner was Gülay home than she was busy potting up gourd seeds to ensure that for next year’s Çaliş Christmas Fair she’ll have more than enough ‘Father Gourdmas’ decorations to keep even you late-comers from disappointment.

. . better hurry, Madam – only a few left!

pps It was really nice to have so many folks coming around and telling Gülay how they already knew about her from blogs, Facebook and ‘Land of Lights’ newspaper, wishing her well and admiring her work – you may never know quite how much of a boost this gives her. Thanks to all those who spread the word. You can learn more and see some of her amazing portraits by clicking here. (She has had commissions from as far away as the UK and US)

Seasons Greetings to you all.

  1. Morecambe and Wise? I need filling in.

Aside from our thrill at reading of Gulay’s success (and increasing fame), I am struck by how globalized a moment the fair was…not a particularly insightful comment, just another recognition of the shifts we are seeing every where.

Please tell Gulay that her turtle stones are going into Christmas stockings all around, and we are so excited for our turtle-lover friends to discover them!
